Prepare to Be Wowed

It’s not very often that, in the business of social media marketing, things happen for your advantage. Very often, as with most marketing, if you want something good to happen, you have to be the one to do it. Independent fortune is a very rare thing.

But all the same, it happens every now and again, and when it does you have to be ready for it.

This coming Monday, Wowd plans to launch a social search feature for Facebook. It will allow users to customize their Facebook experience even further than they can now by giving them the ability to cut out game spam, have one-click summaries, favorite their friends, and conduct social searches.

It’s basically the ability to access Facebook through a proxy. The software client connects through an API, and cuts the interface into three separate tabs: web, social, and history. With the exception of the chat feature, it is able to replicate every feature of Facebook, such as posting photos and “liking” friend’s comments.

Doesn’t sound impressive, right? Keep reading.

Users who download this client will have the ability to turn any of their feeds into a custom search. Alternately, they can set it up so that posts related to a certain keyword will trigger an alert from any friend in the network. And more – Wowd has plans to integrate this client with LinkedIn and Twitter. The goal is to make the web something that’s easier, to cut through the mound of data that is the real-time updates and make it manageable.

When the client first launches, ads will be seen in the aforementioned ‘web’ tab. But that’s not all. Users will also see sponsored links pulled directly from the keywords put through Wowd’s real-time search engine.

In English, what that means is that people are going to have the ability to fine tune their searches around what their friends are talking about. The sponsored links that they see are going to reflect what their friends are talking about. Now how about that? Now suppose that you’ve somehow gotten word of your business or your product into a network of friends. Only one of them has to mention you, potentially, and suddenly links to your service are everywhere in the network.

Perhaps that’s a little too optimistic. It probably won’t be that simple. But even so, it presents a very tempting picture. At the very least, it represents a new avenue to potential clients, and in the end, who doesn’t want that?

Wowd CEO Mark Drummond explains this even better:

We plan to experiment by tying ads to topics in conversations and then place them in the conversation clearly marked as ads… The ads must be useful to people.

So of course, there’s got to be a catch to this, right? The picture’s never complete without that. And the fact is, it’s not perfect yet. They still haven’t figured out how to build an n-gram frequency diagram over keywords, and they haven’t figured out the price for the ads.

But it won’t stay this way forever. This is something to watch.
